About Us

THE JERUSALEM SOCIETY FOR THE WELFARE OF STREET CATS is a non-profit organization, founded in August 2000, run entirely by volunteers. Members include new immigrants and veteran Israelis of all ages, ethnic backgrounds, and ideological orientations -- united by a common concern over the plight of helpless cats and a desire to help alleviate their suffering, in accordance with the Jewish imperative of preventing tsaar ba'alei chaim (the suffering of living creatures).

OUR MISSION: The JSWSC is dedicated to rescuing cats and kittens in distress and ensuring that sick and injured cats receive appropriate veterinary care. We try to find adoptive homes for cats that cannot care for themselves. We facilitate the spaying/neutering of cats in order to reduce feline overpopulation and lessen the misery suffered by unwanted cats. We seek to maintain a stable population of spayed/neutered cats in the neighborhoods, preventing the proliferation of rats and other pests.

WHO ARE WE? In recent months a group of cat-lovers has organized to support the efforts of the JSWSC by raising funds and increasing public awareness, particularly among the Anglo community. We have:
" Doubled membership
" Organized spaying/neutering campaigns for street cats fed by feeders
" Arranged for the distribution of pushkas supporting the JSWSC
" Registered the organization with the PEF, enabling tax-deductible donations in the US

We are currently working on a variety of new projects including a fundraising event, developing "Friends" organizations abroad, and approaching foundations for support. We hope to bring you regular updates on our activities through this newsletter .
